Visiting Yingxiu town, epicentre of Wenchuan earthquake /

Just visited Yingxiu town with the Party Secretary of Sichuan Province, Mr Liu Qibao. Yingxiu was the epicentre of the devastating Wenchuan earthquake in 2008. Only 5,000 out of 12,000 residents survived. The school building, which collapsed, is now the memorial to the earthquake victims.

I also met 4 students from nearby Deyang town. They are studying in two of the schools rebuilt with help from Singaporeans. They presented me gifts to thank Singaporeans for our help and support. One told me about her experience in the earthquake, and wept again as she told it. But they have recovered, rebuilt, and will be the stronger for it. I wished her and all her friends every success, on behalf of all of us. - LHL
